Praxis II Information

The Praxis II Specialty/Content Area exams and the Principles of Teaching and Learning exams are required by the state of Ohio. These state mandated exams measure your knowledge of the content area(s) you plan to teach and your knowledge of the principles of teaching and learning related to the age group(s) associated with your teaching license. In the areas of world languages (French and Spanish), the state of Ohio does not use the Praxis II Specialty/Content Area exams, they use the OPE and WPT exams. See the note below regarding the OPE and WPT exams.

The implementation of educator testing in Ohio is in response to standards adopted by the State Board of Education. The State Board of Education has selected Educational Testing Services (ETS) to provide the licensure examinations for Ohio educators. The Praxis II tests were designed to ensure that all licensure candidates possess the minimal amount of knowledge necessary for entry-level positions.

New Exams Announced by the Ohio Department of Education

Effective September 1, 2010:
Note: If you apply for your license after this date, you need to take these new exams.

  • After September 1, 2010, the test number for the Intervention Specialist: Mild to Moderate and Moderate to Intensive licenses will be changed to 0354, Special Education: Core Knowledge and Applications.
  • After September 1, 2010, the test number for the Early Childhood Intervention Specialist and the PreK Special Needs Endorsement will be changed to 0690, Special Education: Preschool/Early Childhood.
  • After September 1, 2010, the test number for the Reading Endorsement will be changed to 0204, Teaching Reading.
  • After September 1, 2010, World Language candidates seeking multi-age licenses in Spanish or French will be required to complete the ACTFL assessments instead of the Praxis II Specialty/Content Area exams. The State Board of Education has adopted new teacher licensure examinations provided by Language Testing International, which is the language testing office of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL).
  • World Language candidates will need to obtain a score of “Intermediate/High” on the Oral Proficiency Test (OPT) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) to be licensed. However, Wright State requires a score of “Advanced Low” on each exam for admission to the Multi-Age program in either French or Spanish, which is a higher standard that is required by our accrediting agency. Licensure candidates in these programs still need to complete the Praxis II Principles of Teaching and Learning exam.
  • After September 1, 2010, the test number for TESOL Endorsement candidates has been changed to 0361, English to Speakers of Other Languages.
  • After September 1, 2010, the test number for Administrative license candidates (at WSU that is Principal, Superintendent, and C&I Professional Development) has been changed to 0411, Education Leadership: Administration and Supervision.
