Content requirements for Teacher Licensure programs

If you have a bachelor's degree and want to be a teacher, the links below will provide you with an idea of the content course work and pre-professional course work (our pre-requisite education courses and experiences) we will be looking for if you enter one of the college's teacher preparation programs.

Content requirements are the subjects and courses you need to have taken for the kind of teaching license you are seeking. Consult this page and the downloadable documents and compare to your transcripts.

Once you make your decision to pursue a teaching licensure program then request an official transcript evaluation to be completed by the appropriate faculty member or teacher licensure advisor.

Transcript Evaluation
For those who currently hold a Bachelor's degree.

In order for the College of Education and Human Services to determine the courses you will need to complete for specific licensure programs or as pre-requisites to the graduate level initial teacher licensure preparation programs, please complete a transcript evaluation request form (here). Please read and follow all directions carefully before beginning.

If you have no present or past affiliation with Wright State University the university will assess a nonrefundable $25 fee for each licensure area of evaluation you request.

This service is free to WSU students, alumni and applicants who have paid the application fee. All the forms and instructions are provided on the PDF forms we are providing from the link below.

Evening advising is available when WSU is in session. We do not have evening advising between terms or
during the summer months. Other times by appointment.

Note - This page contains the content requirements and pre-professional courses that are required for all of our teacher licensure programs, including those in which the teacher preparation portion is offered via our 5 quarter, Graduate Level Initial Teacher Preparation Program for the AYA (grades 7-12), Middle Childhood (grades 4-9), and Multi-Age (French, Spanish and Art all grades). The Graduate Level Initial Teacher Preparation Programs are marked with an asterisk (*).

Health and Physical Education, Marketing Education, Integrated Business Education and Early Childhood Education are only available on the undergraduate level and those programs do not require the Praxis II exam for entrance.

The faculty have established the following rules for content requirements: (the links for each area lead to Portable Document Format (PDF) files, if you do not have the free program installed on your computer to read and print these documents, we have a link on our resources page to Adobe Reader.)

*Art (Multi-Age Visual Arts) Education
If you have a bachelor's of fine arts degree (BFA) in Art and you have passed the Praxis II exam in Visual Arts, then only the pre-professional course work (our pre-requisite education courses and experiences) remain as pre-requiste course work. There are additional criteria to be admited to the program.  Follow the link below to learn more about the details on the admissions process.

Contact the chair of the Art Department to finalize your requirements. Taking the Praxis II exam in Visual Art is a requirement for entrance into our graduate level teacher preparation program.

Computer Technology Education Endorsement

Early Childhood Education

*English (AYA-Integrated Language Arts)
If you have a bachelor's degree in Literature or English and you have passed the Praxis II exam in English, two or more courses identified by the English department will be required to meet the content requirements. Specific courses may include Adolescent Literature, courses in writing and reading, courses in linguistics and world literature, and the capstone course. In addition, the pre-professional course work (our pre-requisite education courses and experiences) are required to enter this program. *(AYA) Integrated Mathematics
If you have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and you have passed the Praxis II exam (required to enter our program) in Mathematics, two to four courses identified by the Math department are required to enter the program. In addition, the pre-professional course work (our pre-requisite education courses and experiences) remain as pre-requiste course work. There are additional criteria to be admited to the program.

If this is not your case, then consult the PDF forms for Mathematics Education that will guide your content requirements. Taking the Praxis II exam in Mathematics is a requirement for entrance into our graduate level teacher preparation program. Please contact Dr. Susann Mathews, in order to have your transcripts to be evaluated. Dr. Mathews can be contacted at (937) 775-3187. Dr. Mathews advises that you attach the results of your Praxis II subject area exam to your transcripts, include your sub-scores.

Middle Childhood Generalist

*Modern Languages (Spanish or French)
if you have a bachelor's degree in Spanish or French and you have passed the Praxis II exam in that language, then only the pre-professional course work (our pre-requisite education courses and experiences) remain as pre-requiste course work. There are additional criteria to be admited to the program.

Taking the Praxis II exam in Spanish or French is a requirement for entrance into our graduate level teacher preparation program.

Reading Endorsement

Intervention Specialist (Special Ed)
These licensure programs are only available on the graduate level. If you elect to pursue one of these programs - Mild to Moderate, Moderate to Intensive, and Early Childhood Intervention Specialist, you must make an application to the graduate school.

If you are not already a teacher holding a regular classroom teacher certificate, then you must also apply to the college's initial teacher education programs. Follow this link to learn the details of the admissions criteria for our Intervention Specalist initial teacher licensure programs.

Each PDF form listed for the Intervention Specialists indicates Additional course requirements for those who do not currently hold a regular classroom teacher certificate/license.

Endorsement programs for currently licensed teachers are also available: Gifted Endorsement, and Pre-K Special Needs Endorsement. These programs are available only to currently licensed teachers.

These programs are separate, "stand alone" graduate level programs. They are not offered within the Graduate Teacher Preparation model that our Adolescent to Young Adult, Multi Age and Middle Childhood graduate programs are offered. Most of the students in these programs are already teaching under a temporary or supplemental license and attend part time in the evening to complete the licensure and/or master's degree requirements.

The forms below are the licensure check sheets. This area does not have "content" requirements in the same manner as other teacher licensure programs. Additional coursework is required for the Master's degree (you must also enroll as a degree seeking student). The Endorsement programs are not available as a part of a Master's degree.

*Integrated Social Studies
To teach integrated social studies in a high school setting (grades 7 to 12), the content for the Adolescent to Young Adult (AYA) license is determined as follows: Our faculty request that you complete the same content course work that is required of our current undergraduate university program in integrated social sciences. In addition, the pre-professional course work (our pre-requisite education courses and experiences) remain as pre-requiste course work.

Passing the Praxis II exam in Social Studies is a requirement for entrance into our graduate level teacher preparation program. There are additional criteria to be admited to the program.
