Apply to select licensure programs in Teacher Education

Though there may be other documents you need to fill out or other applications required for certain programs in the College of Education and Human Services, most initial Teacher Education licensure Programs require these forms and documents before acceptance. Please read and review the requirements and make sure you have everything you need. You will be saving yourself a lot of time and potential headaches!

Below, you will find links to application information for the Early Childhood Education, Health Education & Physical Education, Career Technical Education (degree) Intervention Specialist (including Transition to Work), Reading/Literacy programs and the graduate level Early Childhood Generalist 4-5 Endorsement (Early Childhood license required).

All candidates for the graduate level Intervention Specialist programs - Transition to Work (TTW), Mild to Moderate, Moderate to Intensive Educational Needs and Early Childhood Intervention Specialist, are required to complete this application process. This application is required for both initial candidates and those who have already been licensed as a teacher.

Candidates to the Classroom Teacher: Reading, M. Ed. program, Reading Endorsement program, the Literacy Specialist Endorsement and the graduate level Early Childhood Generalist 4-5 Endorsement all require a separate admissions process (in addition to applying to the School of Graduate Studies). These are all considered Advanced programs and therefore are restricted to currently licensed teachers. Master's degree candidates enrolled in the Classroom Teacher: Reading program, who desire to earn the Reading Endorsement, do not need to apply separately for that endorsement program.

For information and applications for our initial teacher licensure graduate level teacher education preparation programs for High School (AYA), Middle School and Multi-Age French, Spanish or Art - go here>>

Note: If you do not have a bachelor's degree and are interested in Secondary Education "AYA" or Multi Age or Middle Childhood initial licensure (Mathematics, English, Sciences, Social Studies, Art and Modern Language programs) WSU requires a bachelor's degree in your content area - visit with a teacher licensure advisor to learn about these programs.

Many of our undergraduate level programs require this separate application - if you are unsure or have not checked into it yet. Please view the college's undergraduate admissions criteria >>

2. Attain a passing score on the Praxis I (PPST) Test (or submit ACT/SAT scores to waive the Praxis I exams)

Praxis I Score Requirements: For the Early Childhood program, the Praxis I Score requirements are as follows:

Math: 172

The above scores can be waived if the Early Childhood program candidate submits a composite score of 1000 or better on the SAT or a composite score of 22 or better on the ACT.

*Computer based versions of the Praxis I exams are available. These exams are referred to as the Pre Professional Skills Test (PPST) and you can arrange to take these exams by calling Thomson Learning at 800-853-6773. Test takers who are deaf or hard-of-hearing can call TTY 800-529-3590

Registration and Schedule: A Praxis Series Registration Bulletin and a calendar which lists test dates and all other pertinent dates relating to the Praxis Series tests can be found online at: http://www.ets.org/praxis

5. Complete the Writing Sample:

Policy: The CEHS Office of Student Services will administer a writing sample of 250 to 500 words as a part of the application process for admission.

Schedule: Writing Samples are held in 384 Allyn Hall. Writing Sample collection sessions will be held every Monday at 2:00pm and every Tuesday at 10:00am. The exception to this schedule is when the dates fall on a holiday or other circumstance in which the University is not open for business.

Other times can be arranged by appointment - call 937-775-3088

Procedure: A calendar for each quarter will be made available by the college's Office of Student Services. Students are requested to sign up for sessions, but walk-ins will be honored if space permits.

Applicants must arrange for their writing sample on a timely basis - the writing sample is considered a part of the application and must comply with the application deadlines.

Collection of Writing Samples: Applicants are to report to the assigned room on the assigned date and time.

  • Applicants will provide a large blue examination booklet ("Blue Book"), black ink pens, and a picture ID. Do not bring a dictionary or thesaurus - they are not permitted.
  • Writing Samples are to be written in pen (black indelible ink).
  • Applicants will be asked to present a picture ID to verify their identity.

The supervisor will assign a topic and allow 1 1/2 hours for the completion of the writing sample. It is important to note that the writing sample is not a timed event. We book the room for 1 1/2 hours, but applicants can have as much time as they need to complete the writing sample. The goal is collect a sample of your "best effort", not to see what you produce within a specific time period. Please let us know if you will need more time and we will find another space for you to complete your sample if the room we booked is needed.

Writing Sample Evaluation: The writing sample is available as another item for consideration in the total acceptance process. It is the discretion of the selection committee as to how the sample will be considered and how the sample will be evaluated. Writing samples of Early Childhood candidates are evaluated prior to the application going before the Admissions Committee. Writing samples for other programs are read as a part of the committee review and/or interview session.

Writing samples are evaluated primarily on sentence structure, spelling, grammar, word usage and basics of writing. Content is important but not the primary purpose of the writing sample. Students who feel they need assistance with writing are encouraged to visit the University's Writing Center, 031 Dunbar Library, (937) 775-4186.

Special Circumstances: Students with a learning or physical disability that may require special consideration shall be accommodated through the Office of Disability Services, E186 Student Union, (937) 775-5680. Any modifications of the stated policy and procedure or accommodations made for the purpose of collecting the writing sample will be noted with the writing sample. Exceptions to the customary process may be made with the approval of Chris Murphy, the Director of Student Services, (937) 775-4508.
