The Media Production Lab (MPL)

The Educational Resource Center’s Media Production Lab is a hands-on instructional lab. It is designed for teaching the methods and procedures for producing audio and/or visual materials quickly, inexpensively, and attractively for instructional purposes. The lab may be used by anyone wanting to produce materials to be used in an educational setting.

Fall, Winter and Spring quarters * :
Monday: 8:30 AM - 8:30 PM
Tuesday: 2:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Wednesday & Thursday: Call for availability
Friday: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Sunday: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Summer quarter * :
Monday - Thursday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Friday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Saturday & Sunday: Closed

Quarter breaks:
Tuesday & Thursday: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM (During Winter break, these hours apply only to the first four weeks of the break.)

The ERC is closed all holidays observed by Wright State University.

What can you do in the lab?
  • create bulletin board displays
  • make posterboard presentation materials
  • make transparencies
  • laminate
  • bind books
  • mount photos
  • burn CD's
  • print posters
  • create PowerPoint presentations
  • cut out letters and shapes
  • digitize a word document
  • scan photos and insert into documents
  • convert, copy or edit video tapes
  • create sticker labels

Supplies
Material production supplies are available for purchase in the lab. Individuals may bring their own supplies, e.g. ditto and construction paper, posterboard and tri-fold boards, however, machine-specific supplies must be purchased from the lab, e.g. transparencies, lamination film, and poster print paper.

Methods of payment
Supply prices are based on cost recovery. Supplies may be purchased with cash, personal checks, or MPL supply cards. Internal departmental purchases are possible.  The requesting department must provide its FOAPAL numbers at the time of purchase and the MPL will initiate the Banner journal document.  University procurement cards or personal charge cards cannot be accepted.

Supply cards
The MPL sells its own supply cards in $5 and $10 denominations. A supply card is somewhat like a debit card. The cost of purchased supplies is deducted from the card. Supply cards have no expiration date.

Equipment:
The lab provides equipment for the production of learning materials. Although this is a hands-on lab, various machines must be operated by the lab assistant. This person is available also to demonstrate the proper use of other lab machines. Equipment available for use in the lab includes:
  • book binding machines
  • projector
  • color laser printer
  • computer with optical scanner
  • typesetter-like lettering machine
  • dies and die presses>>
  • dry mount press
  • video converter
  • poster printer
  • laminators
  • Artwaxer®
  • Electronic die cutter

Classes
Classes are taught in the Media Production Lab. During these times the lab is closed. Open lab hours are scheduled around the classes. The lab's schedule may change from week to week. Please call in advance or check the schedule posted outside the lab for its hours of operation.
