Bullies, Victims, and Violence: The Unrecognized Crisis in Our Schools

ED 670/A68
Bullies, Victims, and Violence: The Unrecognized Crisis in Our Schools
Bullies and victims are a universal problem in our schools. Often the situation is ignored with disastrous results -
many school shootings can be traced directly to this problem. Research has discovered that teachers and
administrators frequently ignore the issue. The same research also shows a profile of children predisposed to
become bullies and victims. Among children predisposed are children who witness aggressive behavior in the
home and children who come from schools who do not take bullying seriously. This course will offer concrete
intervention strategies for both teachers and parents to stop the cycle that leads to so many serious problems in
society today.

Data-Driven Decision Making

ED 670/A69
Data-Driven Decision Making
How do you know if you are effective as an
educator or administrator? What data do you use to
make decisions? Upon the completion of this
course, you will have a solid answer for each of the
aforementioned questions. Without data, teaching is
random and unfocused and in the current
accountability structure, we must embrace the
science of teaching as well as the art of teaching.
Elements of standards-based education, assessment,
error analysis, research, conjecturing, and reflection
will comprise this course.
Instructor: Crystal Aker
June 22/23, Friday 5-9 & Saturday 8-2

Modernizing Your Teaching Tools and Assessments

EDT 670/B62
Modernizing Your Teaching Tools and
Assessments
Do your allusions to songs and movies make your
students look at you as though you had tentacles?
Does your hand hurt because you have marked
every grammar error known to teachers? Do you
think the word “blog” is a type of disease? If so,
then step into the future of teaching by participating
in this workshop where you will be shown a variety
of strategies and activities involving media and
technology that will enhance students’ learning. For
example, you will learn how to create a Soundtrack
Essay and how to use song lyrics to teach grammar.
You will also learn to help your classroom “go
green” with technological strategies to assess
students’ writing. Another technological focus of
the workshop is online blogs for your classroom.

Practical Ideas for Implementing a
Comprehensive School-Wide Conflict
Management/Character Education Program
Learn to implement a comprehensive school-wide
Conflict Management/Character Education program in
your school or classroom using practical, time-saving
techniques that will improve student behavior and
increase academic achievement.
You know that classroom and school building conflicts
have a negative affect on instruction and the learning
environment and you want to do something about it.
You want to implement a Character Education/Conflict
Management program, but where do you find the time
and money? Learn to incorporate Character Education
and Conflict Management lessons into your daily
instruction without adding an additional ”subject” to
your busy schedule. Improve the learning environment
of your school and reduce the amount of time you
spend solving students’ problems for them. Learn
proven techniques developed by the staff of an urban
elementary school. With the pressures of standardized
testing and very little funding, they developed a
practical approach that resulted in dramatic reductions
in the numbers of incidents of violence and increased
the amount of time teachers spent on academic
instruction. This program received national recognition
and frequent visits from those wishing to see it in
action.

ED 670/B62
Autism and the Law
How do teachers and administrators find themselves in
conflict with parents of students with autism
concerning special education policies, procedures and
laws? This workshop will examine the common
pitfalls in school – family communications that result in
misunderstandings between school personnel and
families - and outline strategies for reducing the
potential for conflict. We will also review key
principles of special education law and examine how
lack of attention to the law can lead to frustrations for
parents of children with special needs. Our activities
will focus on analyzing policies and procedures in
schools that can support or hinder communication with
families and adherence to the law. Workshop
participants will be ready by the end of the weekend to
assess the strengths and weaknesses of their own
school’s policies and procedures and advocate for
positive changes. (pre-K-12 teachers & administrators)

Developing Cultural Competence
This workshop will promote the understanding of the impact of language, values,
identity, family and community, economics, representation, and recognition on a
student’s education. You will discover the differences between how boys and girls learn,
are treated, and ultimately experience and interpret teacher interactions during education.
You will learn ways in which a student’s race/ethnicity affects that student’s educational
experience and how a teacher’s race/ethnicity intersects with that experience. You will
learn that students’ varied economic backgrounds have a profound effect on student
achievement and learn how to plan classroom interactions that capitalize on differences in
order to enhance rather than detract from a respectful and empowering classroom
