The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) endorsement enables the recipient to teach English as a second language to students in grades PK-12. It is attached to an existing State of Ohio teaching license in a related field.

The licensure can be done independently or as part of an undergraduate program degree. See an advisor for details.

TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (TESOL)
Endorsement

Students seeking an endorsement in TESOL must hold a current teaching certificte or license. Students who do not have a current (expired) teaching credential must complete the renewal requirements for a license prior to the granting of the endorsement.

Upon successful completion of the TESOL endorsement program of study and passsage of the Praxis II test English to Speakers of Other Languages (#20360), the holder of an Ohio standard teaching credential may add an endorsement in TESOL (#050275).

Note: Interested students should contact the director of TESOL.

Consider the following requirements:

a) the endorsement cannot be used without a valid Ohio teaching license

b) to qualify for the endorsement, a student must have take a course in the teaching of reading and have successfully completed one year of a foreign language at the college level, or the equivalent

c) In order to be admitted into the program, non-native speakers of English must obtain a TOEFL score of 250(600) or for conditional admission 213(550). Students will be tested upon beginning the program and may be required to take ESL courses to improve their English skills.
