Managing Conflict Constructively

SUMMER 2008

presented by Dale Eilerman, M.Ed.

Conflict is a common issue addressed by counselors, social workers and administrators but one which most of us are not comfortable dealing with. Participants in this course will gain an understanding of conflict dynamics and learn effective methods for resolving conflict constructively. An assessment instrument will be used to assist in identifying conflict styles. Conflict issues in family, school, and workplace settings will be addressed. Participants will learn to understand the dynamics of conflict; recognize the role that anger and other feelings play in managing conflict; understand the five conflict styles and when each is appropriate; and understand the mediation process and its application in resolving conflict.

(This seminar is applicable for clinical and school counselors, social workers, teachers and school administrators.)

"Windows of Opportunity" Implementing Behavior Modification Programs in Disciplinary Settings at Sec

FALL 2008

presented by Lynne Pierce-French, M.S., LPCC, NC

Every day we hear about a shooting, a teenager who commits suicide, a student who drops out, a bully who beats up
a classmate. Violence, anger, depression, anxiety and a host of other problems have become common place in our
schools. In fact, these problems continue to escalate, making our schools unsafe, significantly decreasing learning
opportunities and impairing our children our children for years to come. This class introduces a new paradigm of
intervention; implementing behavior modification programs into ideal, opportune blocks of time traditionally known
as after school detention, in-school suspension and Saturday school. This class will help participants learn how to
incorporate these programs, how to train staff to lead the interventions, and become familiar with the intervention
programs which are currently available. Other potential "windows of opportunities" for offering these programs will
be addressed, such as classroom time and study hall. Activities during this seminar will include large group
exercises, small group discussion, demonstration, and hands-on experience. Handouts, slides and resources will be
shared.

(This course is applicable for K-12 educators, counselors, and administrators.)
