| Elementary Science Secrets to Success |

Do you need to know all the answers to your students' questions? What if the experiment doesn't work? How can I teach science without a lot of equipment? These important questions will be addressed during this course, and the answers will surprise you! Participants will be able to experience dozens of successful science activities that will transform their science lessons into a "labful" of learning for all students. Process skills and concept-building lessons will be integrated to make every minute count in the classroom. Songs that teach, activities that motivate, and background knowledge that helps all educators feel more confident will be explored. Literature connections, group challenges, and inexpensive materials will be shared. Attend to learn the secrets to successful science teaching! Participants will receive a comprehensive handout that will review all the activities explored.

| The Sky is Not Falling...Treating Anxiety and Depression in Children and Adolescents |

Depression and anxiety can have severe and lasting consequences for children and adolescents. You will be presented clear-cut strategies for addressing these problems creatively and effectively. You will learn a wide variety of helpful interventions including play therapy, bibliotherapy, journaling, poetry, storytelling and writing, games, drama, and music. Topics will include identifying depressed and anxious children and adolescents, learning causes of depression and anxiety such as low-esteem, disturbed body and/or self image, grief and loss, and divorce. Goals to be addressed are empowerment, problem solving, improving coping skills, conquering self doubt, survival tips, overcoming fears and making better choices. Finally, you will learn how to best implement these interventions in the learning environment and educational institutions.

| Why Children Can't Read: Answers and Solutions |

You will be presented with the reason why 43 percent of fourth graders are reading below grade level. It will also present a language arts program which will provide solutions to the problem. The concepts will be presented in a direct and systematic manner using multi-sensory techniques. The instruction will utilize the child's cognitive abilities rather than his/her memory. The principles will be based on instruction recommended by the International
Dyslexia Association. You will use the sound structure of the English Language and the historical influences for decoding and spelling Anglo-Saxon, Latin, and Greek words to develop a curricular framework.

| Learning Centers That Run Themselves |

To reach all children, we know that we must provide learning options that address individual learning styles, motivation, and interests. Self-running activity centers fulfill this need by giving children a chance to learn through auditory, visual, and tactile/kinesthetic modalities. Projects and activities at centers allow children to work individually, in pairs, or in small groups. Well-designed centers can encourage children to participate in creative activities that break away from the paper/pencil tasks so common to traditional assignments. As children learn to manage and self-monitor the quality of their work, they begin to take responsibility for their own learning, forming work habits that will serve them for the rest of their lives. You will learn the features of effective learning centers, how to design and manage self-running learning centers, and how to develop developmentally appropriate center activities for all students. You will receive a packet of ready-to-use activities and information that can be adapted to individual needs and curricula.

| Reading Comprehension: Do We Really Teach It? |

There are many types and levels of reading comprehension. This workshop familiarizes educators with practices that help children develop critical comprehension strategies as they read for different purposes. In addition, educators will be guided in helping children self-monitor their own comprehension through meta-comprehension tools and meta-comprehension questions. You will engage in reading and responding to a wide variety of literature to promote comprehension at each level of Bloom's Taxonomy of Cognition. The link between reading and writing will be explored in pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading activities.

According to social scientists and other researchers, excessive anger destroys relationships, careers, health and inner peace. Anger can drain the joy out of our lives and leave us feeling ashamed, and even foolish. Unrecognized and uncontrolled anger can turn everyday situations or challenges into explosive battlefields. You will gain a better understanding of some causes and conditions that give rise to the increasing number of angry people in our schools, homes, workplaces and communities. Attention will be placed on developing strategies for helping people learn better and more practical anger management skills. This educational program, in a non-threatening manner, will be interactive, informational, rewarding and possibly emotional. You will leave feeling empowered and informed with confidential self-assessments of your personal view about anger. Lastly, you will be afforded an opportunity to create a personal development action or advocacy plan.
