Adapted Physical Education Program Description
Historical Overview
The WSU Adapted Physical Education (APE) program was the first Ohio Department of Education endorsed Adapted Physical Education undergraduate program in Southwest Ohio graduating the initial students in 1988. The program is the first APE program in Ohio to require APE National Certification and an Ohio APE endorsement prior to program completion. In addition, the program exclusively utilizes nationally certified APE specialist as clinical faculty and practicum supervisors.
The program endeavors to prepare its graduates to instruct those individuals with low incidence disabilities. One of the professional training hallmarks continues to be an emphasis on school and community based practicum internships, which provide a pragmatic approach to safe and appropriate psychomotor programming in the least restrictive environment.
In 1997 the program received its initial teacher training grant award from the US Department of Education Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) and in 2002 awarded a 5-year APE teacher training grant in collaboration with the Ohio State University and University of Virginia.
The program continues to serve as an Adapted Physical Education National Standards certification site.
