Educational Technology
Technological advancements have redefined the role of educational technology in the school environment. Merging with established roles as collector of resources and manager of facilities, is the role of instructional designer, technology integration facilitator, computer education specialist, technology coordinator, and most importantly technology competent classroom teacher.

Three primary tracks are available for persons seeking training and skill development in Educational Technology working toward a Masters Degree.

Library Media - Master of Education
Classroom Teacher
Students wishing to pursue licensure in library media multiage through the College of Education and Human Services at Wright State University must hold a teaching credential. Students who do not have teaching credentials must complete the requirements prior to granting of licensure in library media multiage.more>>

New Library Media Course Descriptions

Library Core
EDT 731, 732, and 733 are Library Core courses. Each course includes 25 contact hours working in a PK-12 school library media center with specific assignments aligned to the course and AASL standards. All field experiences must be done in schools with a licensed school librarian. Field experiences must focus on early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescent YA experiences. Sites must include urban and suburban/rural. Students would be expected to insure that all three levels and both types of school districts were covered when the three field experiences and internship are complete. Working students can use a variety of “creative scheduling” options to accomplish field experience requirements. All field experiences would be reviewed and approved by the School Library Media Program Advisor.

EDT 731 School library media I - 5 hrs
Organizing and administration: evaluation, marketing/advocacy, facilities, budgeting, staffing, policies & procedures, managing multiple libraries. Includes 25 contact hours of field experience.

EDT 732 School library media II - 5 hrs
Collection Development - Selection, acquisition, weeding, evaluation, policy development, intellectual freedom, copyright. Includes 25 contact hours of field experience.

EDT 733 School library media III - 5 hrs
Teaching information literacy skills, collaborating with classroom teachers, standards alignment, and evidence-based practice. Includes 25 contact hours of field experience.

EDT 734 SLM Internship - 1 hr
One week internship in a school library media center. Internship to be done after completion of other coursework in program concentration.

EDT 715 Internet and database searching - 2 hrs
Learn techniques and strategies for efficient and effective information retrieval on the free Internet and in subscription databases.

Computer/Technology - Master of Education
Classroom Teacher
Students seeking an endorsement in computer/technology through the College of Education and Human Services at Wright State University must hold a teaching credential. Educational Administrative Specialist
Students seeking a license in Educational Administrative Specialist–Curriculum & Instruction: Professional Development Technology must hold a teaching credential, a masters degree, and evidence of basic technology foundations and advanced training/experience. more>>

Educational Technology Course Descriptions

670-1 to 6 Workshop in Educational Technology
(Also listed as EDE 670.) Intensive, practical study in a selected area of educational or applied technology. Titles vary.

700-2 Entry Seminar for Educational Technology
Introductory seminar into educational technology programs. Students should take this class before or concurrently with their educational technology coursework.

711-4 School Media Collection Development
Focuses on the process for developing school library media center collections. Includes policy development, selection, acquisition, weeding, evaluation, development and use of collections, and copyright/intellectual freedom issues.

715-4 Information Retrieval Through Technology
Search strategies are developed and information retrieval technology is used to access sources. Instructs how to implement skills in an educational setting.

716-4 Building Online Applications
Provides examples and demonstrations of the advantages of using online resources with educators and children who integrate that access into the learning environment. A major project will be required on a subject area of discipline of choice. Prerequisite: EDT 714 or instructor permission.

721-4 Cataloging and Classification
Focuses on the process of developing library media center retrieval systems for print/nonprint resources. Students learn to establish standard bibliographic description, access points, classification, subject description, and MARC format for automated systems.

745-4 The Art and Technique of Storytelling
Students learn principles of the art of storytelling, as this reflects a listening/language experience. Includes a broad foundation in literature, story cycles, storytelling techniques, and program planning.

746-4 Teaching Information Literacy
Major concepts covered include the application of a nonlinear information skills model across curricula: interdisciplinary and authentic curriculum design; and electronic information searching skills.

751-4 Educational Use of Video-Based Technology
Studies the potential, limitations, and techniques for effectively using ITV, radio, distance learning, telecommunications, and interactive video.

756-4 Advanced Television Production
Designed to improve the skills, knowledge, and creativity used in television production. Planning, writing, producing, and editing for educational and informational productions are emphasized.

763-4 Young Adult Literature
Students demonstrate applications of young adult literature for ages 12-21 using booktalks, response-centered approach techniques, literary projects, voices in young adult literature discussions, response journals, and media and young adult literature discussions.

770-1 to 4 Independent Study
Individualized course of study under the supervision of the faculty. May include, but not limited to, extensive readings, the performance of a research project, a paper, or a production.

782-4 Developing Multimedia Productions
Students use elements of instructional design and storyboarding techniques to translate instruction into various types of multimedia projects.

786-4 Applications of Computers in Education
Students learn productivity software, educational software evaluation, curriculum development, and lesson planning integrating computer applications into instructional settings.

791-4 Organization and Administration of School Media Centers
Administrative practices and services that relate to the school library media center. Considers problems pertaining to standards, legislation, personnel, planning facilities, materials, instruction, and management procedures.

793-4 Educational Networking of Computers

799-2 Exit Seminar in Educational Technology
Individual and group study of problems related to educational technology. Enrollment is limited to department majors. Should be taken near or at the completion of master degree program.

817-4 Issues & Implications of Telecommunications in the Education
Students meet in seminar-fashion both in the traditional as well as virtual classroom. All will participate in an interactive, online discussion group. Topics will focus on creating virtual entities, developing a sense of community using online tools, the developing communication infrastructure, how new technologies affect children in the school, the home, and the future job market.

839-4 Instructional Design and Development
Advanced course in the development of a wide range of techniques and materials to improve instruction. Includes factors that facilitate learning, patterns for teaching and learning, the contributions of audiovisual material to improve learning, procedures for designing instruction, and the instructional design plan.

890-1 to 4 Internship
Students are assigned for a maximum of 100 hours to a library, learning center, computer facility, or video operation to gain practical experience under supervised conditions. Graded pass/unsatisfactory.

893-4 Grant Writing and Program Evaluation

895-4 Administration and Supervision of Educational Technology
Covers leadership theory and networking; qualifications and duties of the director; planning and administering the program; preparing the budget; buying equipment and handling materials; in-service training and evaluation of the program.

899-1 to 9 Master's Thesis
The project may be a thesis or creative production and is prepared under the guidance of the student's advisory committee.

975-4 Directed Study
Designed for students enrolled in the Educational Specialist degree program with a focus on technology. Involves library research, analysis, evaluation, problem solving, and critical thinking.
