Vocational Education
(Will become Career and Technical Education upon approval)
The 185-credit hour Career and Technical Education baccalaureate degree program includes 37-credit hours of licensure coursework at the undergraduate level, 15-credit hours in Career and Technical Education, 56-credit hours of general education, and the remaining 77-credit hours in professional education requirements and electives. Designed for students who are employed as secondary Career and Technical Education instructors and possess job-relevant competence, the sequence of courses for licensure is completed in two years (including summers) and the remaining coursework is completed afterward at the students’ discretion. Students that possess an associate’s degree from an accredited university (per WSU guidelines) may apply relevant technical education credits toward the baccalaureate degree (based on institutional approval). Several courses are delivered via web-based instruction; mainly courses are delivered via face-to-face instruction and provide interaction among teacher education faculty, pre-service teachers and guest speakers along with opportunities for interpersonal and social contact, and observation of non-verbal communication and role modeling of instructional delivery. Emphasis for this program is on assisting students with the transition from business/industry to education.

Credit by Exam

Students admitted into the Career and Technical Education bachelor’s degree program (major # 215) have the opportunity to earn up 30 technical elective credits that may be applied towards the bachelor’s degree. Earning credits in this way can provide a substantial cost savings for the teacher candidate.

These credits may be earned by successfully completing the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute’s (NOCTI) Experienced Worker Assessment appropriate to the teacher candidate’s licensure area. Working in cooperation with the Upper Valley Joint Vocational School, the Workforce Education Department is able to provide testing opportunities in twenty-two licensure areas.
